How this TDS rate calculator works

From 1 April 2026, TDS on payments to residents is deducted under Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 and each nature of payment is identified by a 4-digit payment code instead of the familiar 194C or 194J. This calculator handles both: you can search by the old section you know, and it tells you the rate, the threshold, the TDS amount and the new code you must use in the challan and in Form 140 or Form 141.

  1. Choose the nature of payment. Each option shows the old section and the new payment code side by side.
  2. Pick the payee type and PAN status. Rates differ for Individual/HUF and other payees, and a missing or inoperative PAN pushes the rate up.
  3. Enter the payment amount and what you have already paid this year. The tool checks single-transaction and annual thresholds, including the catch-up rule when an annual limit is crossed mid-year.
  4. Read the result. You get the rate applied, TDS amount, net amount payable, code, form and any notes you should act on.

What changed for TDS rates in Tax Year 2026-27

TDS when the payee has no PAN or an inoperative PAN

If the payee does not furnish a PAN, or the PAN is inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar, TDS is deducted at the higher of twice the normal rate or 20%. For purchase of goods (old 194Q) and e-commerce payments (old 194O) the no-PAN rate is 5%. Check PANs before the first payment of the year with our PAN format checker, then confirm status in bulk through TRACES.

OnlineTDS runs bulk PAN verification against TRACES before you file, so no-PAN defaults never reach your return.

Threshold rules the calculator applies

Please verify before filing. Rates and thresholds reflect the Income-tax Act, 2025 and Finance Act 2026 as reported in published rate charts. Codes marked provisional in the mapper (e.g. 1007, 1010, 1012, 1025, 1036) had conflicting references across sources — confirm against the dropdown on the e-filing portal before paying. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TDS rate for contractor payments in 2026-27?

TDS on payments to a resident contractor is 1% if the contractor is an Individual or HUF (payment code 1023) and 2% for any other contractor (payment code 1024). TDS applies when a single payment exceeds ₹30,000 or total payments in the year exceed ₹1,00,000.

What is the TDS rate on professional fees under the new Income-tax Act?

Fees for professional services (old 194J(b)) attract 10% TDS under payment code 1027, and fees for technical services, royalty on films and call-centre payments (old 194J(a)) attract 2% under code 1026. The annual threshold is ₹50,000 for each. Director's fees (code 1028) have no threshold.

Do I still use section numbers like 194C and 194J?

For payments made on or after 1 April 2026, the challan and the TDS statement use the 4-digit payment code under Section 393 instead of the old section number. The old section is still useful as a reference, which is why this calculator shows both.

What TDS rate applies if the payee has no PAN?

If the payee has no PAN or an inoperative PAN, TDS is deducted at the higher of twice the applicable rate or 20%. For purchase of goods and e-commerce payments the rate is 5%.

Which form do I use to report TDS calculated here?

Resident non-salary TDS goes in Form 140 (old 26Q). Property purchase, rent paid by individuals not liable to audit, contract or professional payments by individuals (old 194M) and VDA by individuals go in the Form 141 challan-cum-statement. Salary goes in Form 138.

Does this calculator cover salary TDS?

No. Salary TDS under Section 392 depends on the employee's full income, regime and deductions. Use the income tax calculator for salary estimates, and OnlineTDS Software for Form 138 and Form 16 (Form 130) generation.
