Check a single PAN or paste an entire deductee list. Catch wrong lengths, swapped O/0 and I/1, invalid holder codes and duplicates before they turn into TDS defaults.
Checks structure, holder type and common typing errors instantly. Nothing is sent to any server.
Enter a PAN to check its format.
Every Permanent Account Number has the same pattern: five letters, four digits, one letter (for example ABCPE1234F). Each part carries meaning, which is why a simple format check catches most typing errors before they cause a short-deduction default.
| Position | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 – 3 | Alphabetic series AAA to ZZZ | ABC |
| 4 | Type of holder (P = Individual, C = Company, H = HUF, F = Firm…) | P |
| 5 | First letter of surname (individuals) or of the name (others) | E |
| 6 – 9 | Sequential number 0001 to 9999 | 1234 |
| 10 | Alphabetic check character | F |
| Code | Holder type | Payee type for TDS |
|---|---|---|
| P | Individual | Individual / HUF rate |
| H | Hindu Undivided Family | Individual / HUF rate |
| C | Company | Others rate |
| F | Firm / LLP | Others rate |
| A | Association of Persons | Others rate |
| B | Body of Individuals | Others rate |
| T | Trust | Others rate |
| L | Local authority | Others rate |
| J | Artificial juridical person | Others rate |
| G | Government | Others rate |
The 4th character is useful for TDS: it tells you whether to use the Individual/HUF code or the "others" code, for example contractor code 1023 (1%) versus 1024 (2%). See the payment code mapper.
Verify every deductee PAN against TRACES in one click — name, validity and operative status — inside OnlineTDS Software.
Try it freeFirst check the format: 5 letters, 4 digits and 1 letter, with a valid holder code in the 4th position. This tool does that instantly. To confirm the PAN is allotted, matches the name and is operative, use the Verify PAN service on the e-filing portal, or TRACES bulk PAN verification for deductee lists.
It shows the type of holder: P for Individual, C for Company, H for HUF, F for Firm or LLP, A for AOP, B for BOI, T for Trust, L for Local authority, J for Artificial juridical person and G for Government.
For individuals it is the first letter of the surname. For companies, firms, trusts and other entities it is the first letter of the entity's name.
PANNOTAVBL is the placeholder used in a TDS statement when the deductee has not provided a PAN. TDS must then be deducted at the higher no-PAN rate, and the deductee will not get credit until the PAN is updated through a correction statement.
No. All checks run inside your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved.
Yes. A PAN can have the right format but not be allotted to anyone, belong to a different person, or be inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar. Only a verification against the Income Tax Department database confirms these.
OnlineTDS Software runs bulk PAN verification against TRACES — name, validity and operative status — and flags problem deductees before you file Form 138, 140 or 144.
