A TDS challan passes through three systems after you pay it: the bank reports it to OLTAS, the e-filing portal keeps your payment record, and TRACES matches it with your quarterly statement. Each one answers a different question.
| Portal | Use it to | What you need | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLTAS challan status inquiry (Protean / TIN-NSDL) | Confirm the bank has reported the challan; view all challans under a TAN | CIN (BSR code + date + serial) or TAN + date range | Open OLTAS |
| e-filing portal | Download challan receipts (CRN/CIN) for e-Pay Tax payments; payment history | Login with TAN / PAN | Open e-filing |
| TRACES | See if a challan is matched, its balance and consumption in returns | TRACES login (TAN) | Open TRACES |
Choose TAN Based View, enter your TAN and the date range to get every challan deposited under that TAN, with CIN details you can quote in your return.
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Matched | Challan found and fully or partly used in a filed statement | Nothing, unless you need the balance for another quarter |
| Unmatched | Details in your statement (BSR, date, serial, amount) do not agree with bank records | File a correction statement with the CIN exactly as shown on OLTAS |
| Overbooked | You claimed more from the challan than was paid | Tag another challan or pay the shortfall with interest |
| Balance available | Part of the challan is unused | Use it in a correction for the same TAN, year and payment code |
OnlineTDS Software imports challans, matches them against TRACES before filing and shows unmatched or overbooked challans on your dashboard.
See challan matchingUse the OLTAS Challan Status Inquiry (CIN based view) with the BSR code, date of deposit and challan serial number to confirm the bank has reported it. Log in to TRACES to see whether it has been matched and consumed in your TDS statement.
CIN (Challan Identification Number) is a 20-digit number made of the 7-digit BSR code of the bank, the date of deposit in DDMMYYYY format and the 5-digit challan serial number. You must quote these details in your TDS statement.
Usually 3 to 5 working days after payment, as banks upload challan data in batches. If it still does not show after a week, contact the bank with the payment reference.
The challan details in your statement (BSR code, date, serial number or amount) do not agree with the bank's record, or the challan was paid under a different TAN, year or payment code. File a correction statement with the CIN exactly as shown on OLTAS.
Yes, if the challan has an unconsumed balance and belongs to the same TAN and financial or tax year, it can be tagged in another quarter's statement or a correction.
They are printed on the challan counterfoil or the e-Pay Tax receipt. For e-filing portal payments, download the receipt from the Payment History section after logging in.
OnlineTDS Software matches every challan with TRACES, shows balances and consumption per quarter, and stops a return from going out with a wrong CIN.
